Wednesdays on the Stoop: All About Book Advances w/Authors Guild

Advances range from “not enough to even quit your side hustle” all the way to “you can retire on a beach,” so it's hard for authors to know what to expect. Hear from an agent, an attorney, and a former editor to get insights about what you should consider when negotiating with a potential publisher. We talk about common dollar ranges and payment structures, what happens if a book does not earn out, and more including:

How much to expect for an advance in a given genre or career stage.
What is the author expected to pay out of an advance—travel for research, fact checking, liability insurance?
If a large advance fails to earn out, does it hurt your chances for selling your next book?
Do publishers require an author to have a large social media following or “platform” to get a large advance?

Wednesdays On the Stoop is a series of free writing programming by Zoom every Wednesday from 4 pm - 5 pm. From accountability co-writing to generative prompts to discussions of exciting forms and authors of all genres, these sessions are designed to be a constant structure--every Wednesday at 4 you can count on Blue Stoop to plug you into your writing energy with an informal and supportive session.
