For close to forty years, Canadian poet George Elliott Clarke has explored the intersections of Black, American, Afro-Caribbean and Canadian identity through plays, essays and poems. His verse novel Whylah Falls (Polestar 1990), winner of the Archibald Lampman Award, to the country an undertold history of Black Canada and helped coin the term "AfriCadian." In the years since its release, Clarke has continued to work towards a personal and countrywide sense of Black identity, culminating in his induction as the seventh Parliamentary Poet Laureate. In this very special in-conversation event, local poet Kirwyn Sutherland and George Elliott Clarke will read from their recent works and discuss together their shared Afro-Caribbean past and the full spectrum of differences in their Black identities. A Q&A and book signing will follow the event.
