7/23: "Where Are All the Fat People in fiction?": A Masterclass with Emma Copley Eisenberg

$50.00

Join Blue Stoop co-founder Emma Copley Eisenberg for this 90 minute virtual seminar on fatphobia in literature. All registrants will be emailed a link to join the live session and a complimentary recording afterward.

Date: Tuesday, July 23, 6:00-7:30 pm ET
Location: Online (Zoom)

More than half of Americans are now considered medically “obese” or fat, yet anti-fat sentiment is rampant in contemporary fiction, from prestige award-winning literary fiction by established names, to debut novels, to popular commercial general fiction, crime fiction, and more. In this seminar, through examining passages from recently published novels, I will break down the main moves where I see fatphobia showing up most commonly in fiction. We will also look at passages that grapple with fatness and body size in more playful, exploratory, and liberatory ways and ask how this is achieved on the craft level. There will also be space to discuss the difference between a character’s POV and a bias in the book, as well as how to resist the pressure to sanitize or be only positive about this immensely complicated subject.

All registrants will be automatically entered into a raffle to win a free, signed copy of Housemates by Emma Copley Eisenberg. You can purchase additional raffle tickets below.

Emma Copley Eisenberg is the author of the novel Housemates and the narrative nonfiction book The Third Rainbow Girl: The Long Life of a Double Murder in Appalachia, which was named a New York Times Notable Book and was nominated for an Edgar Award, a Lambda Literary Award, and an Anthony Award, among other honors. Her fiction has appeared in Granta, McSweeney’s, VQR, American Short Fiction, and other publications. Raised in New York City, she lives in Philadelphia, where she co-founded Blue Stoop, a community hub for the literary arts.
